Everyone Deserves Freedom of Spirit



First published in December 1994 Freedom of Spirit has become recognised as a publication dedicated to the future and well being of all breeds of dogs and not specifically a Border Collie publication.

Each issue includes regular features, information on the different disciplines, training and behaviour, letters and news updates, gardening, and countryside issues.

Special features have included Dogs of War, Dogs on the Titanic, Search and Rescue, Dogs in the movies, Dogs in the Services.

Regular training articles include, Training the Natural Way, Happy Recall, Lead Walking, Understanding Aggression, Canine Good Manners, Behavioural problems

...Dogs are derived from wolf and wolf is not the big bad guy that the fairy tales make him out to be. Wolf is gentle and very family orientated; he is also very protective of his personal space. Dogs are far enough removed from wolf for them to be more domesticated but the basic instinct of the original pack animal is still there...



…..Dogs are pack animals and they understand pack rules. That doesn’t mean they should be handled with dominance and they certainly shouldn’t be made submissive, nor should they be scruffed, squirted, ‘eyeballed’, have rattling objects thrown at them, or any other of the ‘techniques flying around the dog world, It simply means they need parenting. Dogs need to feel protected, they need to know that their leader/parent figure/handler can handle any situation that arises and they also need to know about consequences……
